My wife and I stayed for a week in this lovely villa with our three kids, Hector, Hettie and Verity (5, 3, 1), and our friends with their two young children.
The villa is located a couple of minutes off a dual carriageway, which connects to the motorway running straight to Nice (where we flew to). The SatNav takes you to the bottom of the hill, and then you drive up a bumpy track to the villa. BEWARE - you need to drive slowly up the track if you are in a low hire car (like ours - Citroen C3) apart from the gravelly bits where you need to drive fast!
There is loads of parking space, including under tree parking (to keep your car out of the sun - good for sleeping children!) and a turning circle.
The views are great, allowing you to see the villages on the other side of the valley such as La Cadiere and Le Castellet.
The villa is painted bright white and has lots of patio and terrace areas, and is surrounded by trees.
Inside it has the same rustic charm that we have experienced in Majorcan villas. It may look a bit like a Los Angeles hillside villa from the outside but inside it is more French country villa (in a good way!) There are three bedrooms upstairs all with access to the balcony (a double and two twins) with a bathroom. Downstairs is another double (sofa bed) with ensuite.
Incidentally it was pretty hot when we were there so we kept the roller shutters down all the time on the bedroom windows which stopped kids trying to get onto the balcony outside their bedroom windows.
There is a kitchen area, dining area and seating area inside. I tried to avoid these areas, prefer to be outside in the sun! There is a patio out the back which is shaded (ideal for breakfast unless you are mad for the sun like me!) and a large flagged balcony out the front with two separate eating areas and sun loungers. This is where we would eat, drink and generally be merry!
The villa is pretty comfortable and has plenty of space for people to find a bit of quiet space if required (There is a large landing upstairs with sofa, TV, DVD, fireplace and a view, which I never used). In winter I suspect that it could get a bit noisy inside since it is all open plan, but in summer get yourself outside!
It was equipped with all the kitchen utensils and crockery etc that you would ever need. I couldn't get the gas BBQ to light but I informed the owners so this should be sorted very soon.
There is a swimming pool which is great for cooling off in the heat of the day. It is not huge but good for messing around in. It does not have roman steps nor a shallow end for small children, so I would consider bringing a few blow up rings etc for the kids. There is a ladder to get in and out of the pool that can be removed to stop kids trying to go for an unsupervised early morning dip.
We started our holiday at the end of August and it is pretty hot then. I would suggest that guests staying at this time should close the bedroom shutters all day to stop it getting too hot, then open them a little in the evening and at night to get a cooling breeze through them (and blow away any pesky mosquitos.)
One of the great things about the villa is the fact that there are no neighbouring properties and a great Bose speaker HiFi thing which allows you to plug in your iPod and BLAST music out all day and night.
The villa is ideally located for popping into the village (5 mins by car, 10 minute run, 20 minute walk) of La Cadiere which has restaurants, bars, shops etc. There is a takeaway pizza van by the dual carriageway to get great pizzas (and beers while you wait) and a cool patisserie which you can walk to through the vineyards for your morning croissants and bread.
We jumped in the car most days and headed to the beach at Bandol, which is about ten minute drive away. We went to three different beaches, one with waves, one on the island next to a restaurant on the Isle of Bendor and one flat calm one where we rented an awesome pedalo. They were all close to restaurants, had nice sand and free parking. The sea is beautiful!
In Bandol (which is famous for its rose wine) we enjoyed a stroll on the promenade, looked at the pretty sailing boats and gin palaces and had fresh oysters and rose wine. Busy and fun - well worth visiting.
On the way back one day we followed the signs to Chateau de Rochendelle and bough some of the famous Bandol Rose direct from the vineyard. €28 for a 5 litre box. A bargain. Shame we drank it so quickly!
FYI There is no WIFI in the villa but we got 3G on mobiles which was fine for doing a bit of work etc.
We loved our time in this villa and would be happy to recommend it to anyone wishing to sample country life close to the Cote D'Azure but without loads of pesky neighbours. We will be back one day - hopefully!
