Nine of us stayed here for two weeks during July/August 2014. Four Adults and five teenage boys. We had a brilliant holiday! Here are my thoughts and also some things I would have found useful to know before my stay.

The description of the villa on HomeAway is quite accurate although I'm not sure that we understood that two of the bedrooms were not accessible from inside the main house. This didn't matter to us as our children are older teenagers but it might be an issue for families with younger children who weren't sharing a room with adults.

All the bedrooms had air-conditioning and comfortable beds. The kitchen was really well equipped with lots of crockery, cutlery, pots, pans, dishes and gadgets. The spices, herbs and other condiments were a really welcome discovery, I've often wondered why other villas don't provide them or just leave the unfinished left-overs from previous guests. The lounge area was very comfortable and had a huge TV, DVD player, HiFi etc. There were plenty of books, games, CDs, DVDs to keep everyone entertained on hot afternoons. In fact, the villa had almost every home comfort you could wish for.

The pool area and outdoor kitchen is where we spent most of our time when at the villa. There are plenty of comfortable loungers to relax on, two seating areas with plenty of shade, inflatables for the pool and an outdoor fridge/sink/cooking area to ensure that beer, wine and pop are easily accessible for everyone. The little music system and speakers also meant that we could have entertainment, too.

At the side of the house is a Boules pitch which was great fun.

Sandie and Geoff (the owners) live in an annex beneath the main house and are truly lovely people. We found them to be very friendly, helpful and good company, so if you are going to stay here, invite them over for a drink! They keep chickens which provide the most wonderful free range eggs (and which can occasionally be found pecking the ground for anything edible around the boules pitch) along with a couple of small dogs and a cat. There is even a horse in a strip of land running alongside the driveway. We all enjoyed watching the chickens, patting the dogs and feeding the horse, although I'm sure if you didn't like animals you would hardly know they were there. I think I only heard the dogs bark a couple of times during the fortnight and to hear the gentle clucking of the chickens whilst you sunbathe is quite delightful.

The location of the house was extremely good. It's about a mile away from the large lake and a similar distance from a couple of restaurants and some shops. However, you do really need a car to get out and about to explore this very beautiful region of France. There are many perched villages to visit nearby, along with the world famous seaside towns of Cannes, Antibes and St Tropez. Monaco and Italy are about an hour away and the beautiful Gorge du Verdon is about 2 hours away.

I would definitely recommend a stay at Villa Ambois but my top tip would be to watch out for the mosquitoes right from the start of your holiday. They start coming out at about 4pm and being prepared with DEET repellant and citronella candles really makes a difference!

We arrived late (black Saturday) and were guided in by Sandie. Our first impressions aren't really worth sharing as we had just had 12 hours in the car with a 4 & 2 year old!! Anyway, we were last there so ended up with the smallest room, which was not very big but all the other rooms were a nice size and had en suite bathrooms.

There are a lot of things to recommend this property for a big group:

The outdoor space is great and the seating area is right next to the swimming pool and has loads of shade
The house feels rural and secluded although it's just 5 minutes from a massive supermarket & 2 from a boulangerie, boucherie, poissonerie
There is an outdoor kitchen and fridge
The kitchen is well equipped - blenders, scales, 2 ovens, microwave etc
The house is well off the main road so is very, very quiet at night (and in the day)
The pool has an alarm (which sometimes didn't go off straight away)
There is a great big TV with lots of DVDs and English freeview
There is aircon in all the rooms and the lounge
The owners are really nice people and were great with our kids and really knowledgable about the area
The owners (Sandie and Geoff) have 2 lovely dogs
There is a lovely horse a 50m walk from the house
There is a boules court
The house is a 3 minute drive from the lake
There is also a sandpit and trampoline for the kids

What I didn't like so much:
The decor is a little dated - some would call it rustic
The mosquitoes were a nuisance, esp at dusk (can hardly be helped) although loads of coils, anti mossie plugs etc were provided

In summary this place would definitely come recommended if you want to spend your time round the pool, having al-fresco lunches and BBQ'ing with friends (there is a Webber BBQ). We all loved it.
