We've stayed in Menerbes before and often wanted to rent this house but it was often booked. At last we got to stay! The property owner and his local house manager were both really nice to deal with. They communicated clearly and promptly. When I was slow to get back in touch they followed up with me.

The house itself was as described and as shown on this and other websites. The rooms are spacious, light, and nicely decorated. Three rooms have en-suite bath and shower rooms. Two rooms, for us the "kids rooms", share a shower room. There are loads of spaces to escape to to read a book quietly.

What I loved about the house is its "surprise factor". On the outside it looks like an old village house but on the inside it's a well-furnished contemporary delight. The entire back wall of the house is made of glass and looks out onto a massive rock face. In places, the rock face is actually inside the house which is a cool (and in the summer, cooling) feature.

For a rental property the kitchen had everything wanted. Typically we would take meals in the ground floor courtyard or in the dining room. The roof top terrace was great for admiring the views and the odd sunset aperitif but four floors up (as you would expect!) so not the place for degustation menus! Talking of meals all the restaurants we have liked in the past were still there and actually open during our stay which was quite early in the "season".

We arrived early in the morning and Corinne the property manager allowed us to leave our luggage and return later when the house had been cleaned by their brigade of housekeepers busy as bees!

When we returned at the usual check-in time Corinne showed us around, took care of our rental paperwork, received our security deposit and gave us all sorts of useful local advice.

Other than the odd cobweb in difficult to reach places (the house is in the countryside after all) the house was clean and tidy. I fact as we arrived early in the morning we ac

Lastly, talking of cleaning the Ancienne Poste was one of the few properties to include twice weekly cleaning in its rate and this really helped us be lazy and feel right at home. Thank you for a lovely stay!

Given the disparity of our experience with other people who have had the "pleasure" to stay in this troglodyte house i have attached a few photos..

Anyway - Where to start ?

I guess the only high end part of the holiday was the price. After that it went rapidly downhill.

The house was filthy when we arrived. Inside, stools were attached to tables with cobwebs. Outside, the back "cave area", which is open to the sky right at the top, is filled with dead plants and pigeon excrement.

The good news ? The owner very kindly offered us a full refund late on the Sunday night ( having arrived on Saturday).

The bad news ? Despite telling his "trusted property advisor" the next day that we would be accepting his offer, finding alternative accommodation and moving out as soon we could (end of first week)... he decided that we hadn't given enough notice. Hmmm.

And then threatened to have his manager turn up halfway through with the gendarmes to ensure we left before the end of our rental period.

Oh - and did I mention that despite his assurance that it was "perfect for kids" the internal steps are open and the railings on the windows upstairs are easily wide enough for a child to fall through. That's okay though as we can just " hold her all week or shut the windows". Thats the answer I was looking for !

Beyond a failure to adhere to his word and a dangerous house for small kids, there were a whole host of other issues - pool farther than stated and un-walkable (so very surprised to see pool in description), dishwasher fuses whole house when turned on ( but a "user error" of course. I must have been pressing the button marked "fuse whole house" rather than "on" when I used it), missing sun umbrellas, BBQ with the gas incorrectly fitted, and later had a fat fire , and a house alarm that went off repeatedly ( my favourite time was 0340).

SO we went to the UK Small Claims Court on Monday to see what we could do to get redress... and ....

it turns out that turns out that the Owners terms and conditions state French Law applies, so back we'll go to suggest this is unfair at the next hearing. A disingenious way to avoid one's moral responsibilities.

Unfortunately there is no ability to give 0/5

We stayed there with my wife and two teenage children. The house was incredibly well done. I typically prefer more of an antique feel but the combination of the old structure and the modern décor was spectacular. The entire back wall is glass looking into the patio, which is literally carved out of the rock behind the home. Finally, the views over the countryside from the front of the home were fantastic.

As the other reviewer mentioned, the local representative was terrific.

We also loved Menerbes. It's a little sleepy compared to some of the other villages but I found it had everything we needed. There is a small grocery a short walk from the house that had great local fare and, of course, you could get wine everywhere. We ate out a lot and never had a bad meal.

One thing that we didn't expect was the tourist fascination with the house. It has a historic plaque on it and when tourists come to town, many press their faces right up on the window to see in! It certainly wouldn't keep me from staying there again but you might want to keep that in mind.

Finally, we booked this through a travel company and not directly with the owner. For some reason, the price came down after we booked it but the agency wouldn't give us the lower rate. If I book again, I will probably go right to the owner.
