We enjoyed a couple of days at Villa Chandra. The view from the all open 1st floor is stunning - over the rice fields on the ocean. Unforgettable if you wake up like this after your first night surrounded by the sound of crushing waves and exotic animals :)

The staff was very friendly and helpful and we enjoyed the fresh and rich breakfast.

We got literally hundreds of good recommendations to discover eastern Bali on our scooter (highly recommended, ask staff for rentals).

The big pool was perfect refreshment after our tours.

Come here to explore the real Bali far away from the hussle of hyped areas like Ubud or Canggu.

This is a complex review. Positives first, the place itself if beautifully situated, away from street and any "club" noise. The view is jaw-dropping, over rice fields to the water about 40 meters away. A very good breakfast is served downstairs in the garden. And though it is not obvious, pick up and delivery is included in the very reasonable room rate. There is a completely open (netted) king size bed on the second floor, which is a large open space with chairs, tables, sofas and a koi pond (yes on the second floor) on three sides. We spent all of our time up here. Downstairs is a little less attractive, through it has the larger of the two baths and an air-conditioned bedroom we never used. The owner and his wife live in the "big house" next door, and they extended to us in invitation to sit in their garden and swim at their pool. They know the area and are not stingy with good advice. The staff are absolutely lovely and they make you feel welcome and cared for. The negatives were the barking dogs---not aggressive but loud and annoying, especially when you walk in. If you're a dog lover, this can be a plus, because they are friendly. The other negative was the food. As nice as it was to eat on the second floor terrace, and as nicely as it was served, it was not very good and it was at least twice what you would pay locally for similar fare. We made a mistake of ordering king prawns, (in advance the night before so they could be sourced at the market that morning) only to find that they were farmed shrimp and basically inedible. When the owner was politely informed about this, there was not remedial action. I could think of several (don't charge, charge only for the cost of the shrimp.

As for so many places in Bali---a scooter is the way to travel. If you know how to ride a scooter, rent one (if you don't, DO NOT LEARN HERE). The freedom to get around on your own, and not get caught it the traffic, is terrific. You will need transport, unless you're idea of travel is sitting around a pool and taking short walks.

So---if you enjoy dogs and are not bothered by them, and if you make a point of eating in restaurants, this is a great place.

Many thanks for your honest revue and all the great tips you have given to both us and future guests. We will not be serving the shrimp again - unfortunately many of our guests have loved them but not all and we would rather stick to the fresh fish from the market you had twice which all our guests love without exception.

Good luck and have a grand tour.
