I need to preface this post by saying we travel extensively and are not picky. We can sleep in tents and rain forest huts as easily as we can sleep in a luxury resort. We accept that mistakes happen and often that is part of the adventure of traveling but our experience with Villa Moon was the worst so far, and we've seen some crazy stuff!

Shortly after making our reservation we received a message from Wayan, helper to Morgan, the owner, asking about details for our airport arrival. I sent back the date, time, airline, and departure airport and received a confirmation that we would be picked up in an APV van.

We arrived at the airport on time, grabbed our luggage and waited, and waited, and waited. We are a family of six so we even split up in hopes of spotting something or someone. All the while I was calling every number I could find for Villa Moon. When we called Wayan's phone we would just get a confused lady who said in broken English that Wayan was probably on his way to the airport, maybe, not sure. After some digging and more waiting I finally got a hold of Morgan.

When I told him where we were and that we were waiting he sounded confused and surprised and then said, "Oh yes, today is the 9th. There was a mistake. Just take a taxi to the villa and I will pay you back." So we jumped in the taxi and handed the driver our phone (keep in mind every phone call is a long distance call to and from the US). Morgan gave our driver directions and off we went. We drove down the narrowest of roads, barely clearing the sides of the car and arrived at the supposed villa.

My husband and I got out of the car to check things out and found it wasn't Villa Moon. The staff there insisted in very broken English that that was where we had reserved so we got back on the phone with Morgan. When I explained the situation he insisted that I had reserved that particular villa but when I told him "absolutely not" and that I had a copy of my reservation and it's pictures he said, "Okay, why don't you stay there 2 nights and then go to your villa in a couple of days?" I explained that it was late at night and that we had no intention of settling in for 2 days and then moving so he finally said that we could go to our villa and were accompanied by his confused staff. But before we left the first villa, while still on the phone with Morgan, I asked Him what was happening. He explained that he had been entertaining his uncle and had completely forgotten us! When we finally arrived at Villa Moon the entire area had not been swept with leaves everywhere and the fridge was just disgusting. I truly don't think it had been wiped down in months.

We decided to make the best of it and went out to eat and then to bed. As I crawled into bed, my husband shined his phone light on the space between the mattress and the headboard and found spider webs. I just curled up in a ball and covered my head with the sheet. Meanwhile, the children that got the upstairs bedroom slept on supposedly clean, yet dingy sheets on a thin mattress on the floor. The noise from the mopeds outside the villa made the master bedroom unbearable. We didn't sleep more that 2 hours all night. Plus the mosquitos are a huge problem. (Where we are now they fumigate weekly, drastically reducing the problem.)

The next morning we discovered pots and pans covered in spider webs, ants, and rust, sitting on a rotting shelf unit with mildewed tile in the kitchen and bedroom walls and shelves in desperate need of sprucing up. Under the stove we discovered black drips and gunk that made cooking a definite no. That was it. No one would dare eat or take a shower so we checked out that morning. Morgan never called to see how things were going after the rocky start or even where we had gone. Also, there is no local area information! Nothing, not even a map!

One evening about two days later and we were long settled into a clean, new villa with serious and helpful owners, Morgan finally called to inquire as to why we had left, stating that we were the second group to leave early and he wanted to know why. As I explained all the reasons why (again paying a long-distance call), he actually had the nerve to say he believed we had checked out not because of the state of his villa but because I was mad about the airport pick up! I insisted that his place is in desperate need of attention, particularly the kitchen area. I told him it was one step up from camping and he didn't agree. I am sitting right now in the garden of a lovely villa with clean cupboards that close and spotless state-of-the-art appliances. The rooms and bathrooms are modern and immaculate. Morgan really needs to take a look at the competition. He is delusional if he thinks his property even comes close. He complained that he thought he should have received at least 50% of the weekly rental price and that right now is high season and our moving out "hurts". If our rental was that important why did he forget us, send us to the wrong villa, and not have something clean and ready for our rental. He wants the money without any responsibility or work on his part. My husband and kids (ages 21, 18, 16, and 12 so old enough to know the difference) have repeatedly thanked me for finding a different option and dodging that dodgy bullet!

It is unfortunate because the patio and pool area of Villa Moon is stunning and the staff is sweet and discreet but you honestly get the feeling this place was abandoned long ago. Go if you only want a camping vibe with a nice pool / patio area.

We took some pictures of true state of the villa and I will add then when I return home and have downloaded them. Please, go somewhere else!

            Tamara,

I don't think it's possible to answer all of your complaints. You were negative from the get go when you arrived in Bali and it is really reflected in your review. We are sorry the Villa didn't meet your high expectations. Your account of the situation is your opinion.
The villa is a little old, some maintenance is required. It was built 15years ago, its got some character. There are some newly renovated spaces and we are continuing to improve the villa to make the rooms and interiors more comfortable. Bali is a place full of insects and mosquitos and spiders aren't excluded. Although I have never seen spiders and cobwebs at the villa and you are the first to mention it, your harsh criticisms will still be acknowledged and parts of the Villa can and will be improved upon.

The location of this villa is fabulous. Walking distance to beach and eat street and lots of great restaurants. The villa itself is unusual in its layout and outdoor living area and kitchen (take mosquito precautions). The bedrooms are nice. The garden is well maintained by the gardener who comes everyday. As is the house tidied daily by the housekeeper. These staff are lovely and totally unobtrusive.
A couple of suggestions that I think could improve this property - The fact that there are no pool lounges is a major oversight. There was no where to sit, other than on the couches in the living area. It kind of renders the pool as being insignificant to anything other than a quick dip. And the tiles around the pool are very slippery when wet, so this is quite a hazard. I think also providing basic amenities such as clean water and toilet paper would also be beneficial. Granted we had supply of these for a few days and then we were to buy our own. This is minor but perhaps this should have been made clear, as also the need to pay 30,000 rupiah per person to have a "registration with the police" upon arrival. A mosquito zapper in the living area would be good. The DVD players are pretty ancient and wouldn't play any of our bali DVDs. Whilst there are three bathrooms (and 4 toilets), one of the showers in an ensuit is really poor, and the shower in the main bathroom doesn't have hot water. There is also no hot water in the kitchen. Despite these flaws, we thoroughly enjoyed our stay. I'm sure this villa could be made so much more comfortable if some of these recommendations were taken on board.

Beautiful spacious villa with ample all fresco cozy living space and garden in Seminyak area. The road access i very narrow and taxi may not like to enter it but you can walk about 10 min from the main road to reach the villa.
For the price they offered; around 30 U$ per person per day we can't complain, housekeeping was done in the morning and the lady will bring you a traditional Balinese breakfast on request.
The swimming pool was cleaned and serviced everyday but the bubbling Jacuzzi switch was located in a hidden underground shelter and not accessible to the guests.
For 6 adults you have 2 large bed rooms with each a big bathroom at the ground floor and 1 room in the attic with a toilet only, the guests who sleep at that room have to use the guests bathroom at the grand floor to take shower, (it is no water eater on that one).
It is an nice extra accommodation next door accessible from your own garden if you need an extra room ( extra charges apply).
THANKS TO Mr. MORGAN (the Owner), who came to check if all was in order and took note and promise to take care of our little comments to make the villa as its best, like some bulbs fused, Jacuzzi switch, cloth hangers, save box in 1 room only, 1 soap only in the bathroom amenities, water heater, no iron & board, no coffee and tea facilities and the attic too tin mattress.

In conclusion we had a pleasant stay and will recommend the Villa moon especially that the little comment will be taken care off.
